Saving the environment is more important than ever. And now, thanks to an innovative Turkish company called Pugedon, people can do it while helping the street animals of Istanbul.
The green initiative is excellent news for the planet. Single-use plastic has doubled over the last ten years, leading to a massive increase in sea and beach pollution. Experts believe ingesting single-use plastics kills around 1 million marine birds and 100,000 marine animals each year.
Drop a bottle, feed an animal
The idea is super-simple. Locals and tourists drop their used plastic bottles into one of the new recycling machines placed around the city. It then realises a portion of food for stray dogs and cats. There's even a little bowl for any leftover water.
Pugedon's machines are a welcome sight for Istanbul's stray animal population. Turkey's capital city is home to around 150,000 stray dogs and many more feral cats. The machines provide free food and water in a country that isn't well-know for having stringent animal welfare laws.
Moving in the right direction
In many cases, stray dogs and cats are viewed as pests, rather than potential furry friends.
But the new vending machines prove that some Turkish companies are trying to move attitudes in the right direction. In the meantime, at least the cats and dogs of Instanbul can go to sleep with a full belly.
