Theories abound of the cause of the phenomenon. Many a picture on the internet shows a cat upon a laptop, prompting some observers to consider the reason to be the cat’s mimicking of the human love of tech. But others suggest cats do it in order to seek attention.
In fact, the reasons are so various that even famed fact-checker Snopes has had a crack at deciphering this particular feline behaviour.
Bring in the expert
Snopes talked to animal behaviourists in an attempt to uncover the secret of laptop sitting. Turns out the behaviour has different causes according to the cat.
Some cats will indeed mimic their owner, but others choose to sit on a laptop because it is warm; there are also moggies that just want the human to pay them more attention.
To be sociable or not to be
The cat is in fact more sociable than we imagine. It is an animal that not only can survive without interaction with humans but also can enjoy what human interaction has to offer. Dogs were up until recently thought to be the only domestic species capable of bonding with us, but we now know cats too have an ability to grow fond of their owner.
As for the claim that cats sit on laptops to be close to their owner and bid for attention? Snopes could only come up with a rating of ‘Unproven’. Perhaps future research will widen our understanding.
