Olga Lystseva was the first to spot the German Shepherd at the side of the road, but she didn’t stop straight away. For nine miles, the image of the poor dog forlorn and exhausted haunted her. She turned back to where she had first laid eyes on the animal, and there he was still plodding along.
Looking more closely at Kiryusha, Lystseva noticed how bedraggled he looked, and wondered briefly at why he was covered in soil. No matter. For now, she was just pleased to have rescued the dog from whatever had befallen him.
Safe and sound
Arriving in Ukhta, Lystseva handed the dog to an animal shelter. Workers began the careful task of cleaning the patient and nursing him back to health. In due course they began to post pictures of the dog on social media with a view to rehoming him.
A harrowing tale
This week shelter workers learned of how Kiryusha had ended up on the roadside. His owners - thinking him ‘unhealthy’ - had in fact administered a lethal concoction of drugs that they hoped would kill him. As he slipped into unconsciousness they then buried him in woodland.
Kiryusha was not dead though; his heart was made of sterner stuff. Bravely he fought his way out of his makeshift grave, and thus began his next journey.
Thankfully, Kiryusha has since recovered from his ordeal and is waiting for his forever home.
