The little kitten was discovered at just a day old all alone by the side of the road under the hot sun. Not only did she weigh just 85g, but the poor kitten had painful sunburns all over her body.
She was desperate for help, and the sounds of cries attracted the attention of a passer-by who took the tiny feline to Tiny But Mighty Kitten Rescue.
But there is also something rather unique about little Janie. Her fur has a very unusual silvery coating, known as fever coat. When a pregnant cat is ill due to an infection or becomes distressed during her pregnancy, it can cause the pigment in her kittens’ coats not to deposit correctly, leaving parts of the fur looking silvery-grey, cream or red.
Feline foster mum
Janie was kept in an incubator for two weeks and bottle-fed to help her get back on her paws. But it wasn’t just Melissa, the owner of the rescue centre, who kept a close eye on the poorly kitten. June, a cat mum, also watched over the kitten.
When she was well enough, Janie was introduced to June, who despite already having four kittens of her own, seemed eager to add little Janie to her litter. June spent 10 minutes giving Janie a good lick before nursing her along with her kittens.
Melissa shared Janie’s story on Instagram, much to the delight of her 40,000 followers who have loved watching Janie settle in with her new feline family.
