Pinellas Park Police Officer Joseph Puglia was travelling in his squad car along a busy interstate when he saw a dog hit by another vehicle after wandering out onto the road.

Officer Puglia immediately stopped in front of the injured dog, and his car's dashcam caught what happened next.

Life-saving rescue

The dramatic footage shows Officer Puliga risk his own life by running onto the busy Interstate 275 to rescue the poor injured dog. Not sure whether the dog was still alive, the officer wrapped the dog in an emergency blanket and got him back to his car, relieved to see him finally start breathing. He quickly called dispatch to tell them what had happened and to alert the Pinellas Animal Hospital that Officer Puglia was on his way with an injured pup.

Remarkably, the pup survived his ordeal with just a few cuts and bruises, and after a thorough examination by the vet, was expected to make a full recovery.

'Lucky' ever after

The dog, appropriately nicknamed Lucky, is now being cared for at an animal shelter. As the pup doesn't have a tag or microchip, it's not been possible to track down his owners. However, it looks like 'Lucky's' good fortune continues as if no one claims him, Officer Puglia's family have offered to adopt him.
