It is one of the worst pains in the world to lose your babies – and that applies to animals too. So when Georgia the mix breed lost her litter, she became completely depressed.

When Georgia was first picked up by the Sunshine Dog Rescue, she was heavily pregnant. Shortly after arriving at the shelter, she went into labour.

Unfortunately, all the puppies were premature. None of them were strong enough to survive, and within a few minutes, Georgia found herself childless.

Surrogate mother

Georgia fell into deep despair. She became extremely agitated, and was constantly and nervously looking for her missing babies. Shelter staff knew they had to do something to help her. So they started looking for orphaned new-born pups in other rescues who could use a nursing dog mum.

They didn’t find any puppies who needed her, but they did find a solution. A nearby shelter had three new-born kittens who had just lost their mother. They too, were stressed and confused. They too, needed a family.

The best mother

It was a long shot, but shelter staff knew they had to try. They carefully introduced the kittens to Georgia, and couldn’t hold back their tears when they saw a miracle unfold before their very eyes.

Georgia immediately calmed down and went into a full-on “mother” mode. She laid down to let them nurse, licked them clean, and cuddled with them when they slept. Thanks to her, the kittens grew big and strong.

Now they are all ready for their new homes, and great news – one of the kittens will be going to Georgia’s forever home with her!
