It is a tall order, we will admit. One person’s favourite film dog will not be the choice canine of another.
So let’s take things slowly.
According to research conducted by Dog Friendly Cottages, the most popular Hollywood breeds are Jack Russells and posh mixed breeds (of course). JRs have starred in films such as Hotel for Dogs, the Mask and Babe: Pig in the City.
Hollywood’s official top dog though is Dug from the 2009 animation ‘Up’. Dug’s ranking takes into account the amount grossed by the studio plus a people’s census. Dug (a Golden Retriever) is closely followed by Max, the plucky Jack Russell from The Secret Life of Pets.
According to some observers, male dogs account for 90% of doggy actors on screen, and that includes animations!
Dug and Max rule!
The dog most loved by audiences the world over is… yes, you guessed it… Dug! This was based on a joint score from both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
But the most profitable dog in Hollywood according to IMDB is Max. Max’s debut came in 2016 with the release of The Secret life of Pets. The film brought in tickets sales of just over $800 million.
