It is, sadly, an all-too common event: missing person, relatives distraught, potentially a sorry end for all concerned.

Although from time to time there is a happier ending to such a tale. Just so in New York State after the disappearance of an elderly woman from her Boyle Road home in Selden, Suffolk County.

The woman - who remains nameless - vanished from her apartment within a senior living complex. The following day, when her daughter found her mother gone she called the police, and they put their best man on the job: a 5-year-old German Shepherd called Maverick.

The discovery

Searching nearby woods, Maverick alerted his handler within 10 minutes.

“Within 10 minutes Maverick pulled me over,” Officer Teufel told Newsday. “He smelled her and we found her laying on the ground in the woods.”

Officer Teufel believed the woman had been lying where she fell for the whole night. The woman was taken into care at the local hospital and pronounced well enough to return home later that day. The brave K-9 had only three weeks earlier discovered another elderly patient with dementia who had been missing for eight hours.

Great work Maverick!
