International Dog Day was started in 2004 as a way to celebrate our furry friends and raise awareness of the benefits of adopting, rather than buying, a dog.
This year, David Beckham celebrated the day in style, posting a candid snap of a canine slurp-fest to Instagram. Beckham’s Cocker Spaniel Sage was caught planting a sloppy kiss upon the former footballer's mouth.
Top dogs and up-and-coming breeds
As adorable as it is as a breed, the Cocker Spaniel was not top dog in the UK this year, according to Facebook. The social media giant collated comments, likes and posts from UK users to reveal the Labrador as the nation’s favourite pooch (after how often the breed has been mentioned).
Smaller breeds have always had their followers, but recently some have made more of an impression than others. The Dachshund, for instance, used not to be a favoured breed, but is now the 11th most popular choice of dog in the UK.
