Indeed, this kitten is sleeping with a toe in his mouth!
And it’s not just any toe – it’s his thumb! And the little fella is clearly sucking on it, just like a human baby would suck on its thumb!
Though this human-like behaviour may seem strange, it’s actually pretty normal for such a young cat. The kitten seems to be only a few weeks of age, and is most certainly not weaned yet. Because of this, the kitten probably has a strong urge to suckle as he would on his mother’s teat if it was available. Instead, he tries to find the closest thing to it: his own thumb.
Proper weaning is key
If your kitten was separated from its mother before being properly weaned, you may see this behaviour endure into adulthood. Some adult cats can even be seen suckling at their own teat!
This is really nothing to worry about, even though it may look a bit unsettling! However, it is important for kittens to stay with their mothers for as long as they need to – meaning until they are at least 12 weeks old.
