A popular TV trio

Fans of Gardener’s World have come to fall in love with Monty Don’s dogs Nigel and Nell. The two Golden Retrievers lollop around the garden with Monty and have become unexpected stars of the show.

Nigel even receives his own fan mail and lent his name to Don’s book, “Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs”.

But, in a tear-jerking Instagram post on Monday, the presenter announced that the beloved pup had sadly passed away.

Very sad news

Nigel had been ill and had surgery last year to remove tumours in his mouth. He recovered well (after a period of taking it easy) but then was taken ill quite unexpectedly at the weekend.

Taking to Instagram, the presenter explained “he was suddenly taken ill and he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering”.

He went on to say that the dog had been his usual loving self until the end and had been buried in his beloved garden with plenty of tennis balls.

A social star

The post announcing the news now has over 95,000 likes and over 20,000 comments all offering their condolences.

A dog is a member of the family and the loss of a pet is so tough. We hope all of the lovely memories of Nigel will help him through these difficult days.

We wish Monty, his family and his other gorgeous pooch, Nell all the best.
