This is one of the more difficult cases of animal welfare. An owner loves his dog and doesn't want to part with it. However, vet costs are high and his dog is sick. He can no longer care for his dog properly but would rather keep her than relinquish her. It is a sad tale, which is all too common.
A duty to our dogs
Having a dog incurs a lot of different responsibilities. You have to take the time to exercise, train, groom, and feed him. But you also have to be financially prepared to care for your dog when he gets old, or sick.
This is the message OIPA wanted to convey when they posted these frightening photos of Gessy, whose health had clearly been neglected by her owner.
Indeed, Gessy's owner had recently lost his job, and though he continued to feed his dog and put a roof over her head, he was no longer able to afford the expensive medication she needed to treat her dermatitis.
Gessy's dermatitis caused her an excessive amount of itchiness and hair loss, leading to alopecia and even provoking the formation of ulcers.
The right thing to do
Luckily, Gessy's owner loved her so much that he ended up making the right decision and giving OIPA permission to seize and transfer her to a local animal shelter, where a competent vet team would be able to care for her.
Now Gessy is feeling much better and will soon be ready to enter her new forever home.
