On December 21st last year Robert Black was seen hitting his dog several times in the face. The incident was initially filmed by a bystander in Victoria Park, Newbury. The bystander then called the police officers who managed to access CCTV footage of Black’s actions.
Black appears to have been incensed by his dog’s interest in other dogs in the park. He quickly reaches out for his dog and while holding it by the collar hits the animal five times with his fist.
PC David Burleigh (investigating) said in a TVP press release, “Black demonstrated significant cruelty to his dog by punching it several times in the face, with no concern for its welfare.
“This behaviour is clearly totally unacceptable for a pet owner and I am pleased that not only has he received a prison sentence for his actions, but that he has been banned from owning animals for the next 10 years.
“We take reports such as these seriously and will look to investigate and take action against anyone who carries out this type of offence.”
On November 21st 51-year-old Black was found guilty of one count of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at Reading Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to 23 weeks of imprisonment and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge. He has also been banned from owning animals for 10 years.
Black’s dog has since been rehomed. It received no injuries in the attack. However, the decision of the court is fully justified in light of Black’s cruel actions. Not only had he inflicted certain pain upon the dog but by grabbing its collar Black made sure the animal was not able to escape the punches thrown.
Another unfit dog owner gets their just deserts.
