This poor pooch may have never been found if these two random events hadn’t occurred. And if she hadn't been found, she probably wouldn't be alive today...

Renovations were taking place in a neighbouring house in this area of Miami. Suddenly, a loud alarm went off. Frightened by the sound, the dog stood up. This movement was noticed by one of the construction workers, who decided to take a closer look.

Dog in a sad state

What Claire saw shocked her to her very core. The American Bulldog was in terrible condition: severely emaciated, she was covered in ticks and fleas, and both of her eyes looked infected. The dog was also chained, and no doubt had been there for quite a while already.

Claire started calling animal services, and the police, but wasn’t getting much of a response. Not knowing what to do, she took several pictures of the dog and posted them on Facebook, tagging 100+ Abandoned dogs of Everglades Florida.

Jan Stenger, a volunteer from the rescue group, showed up shortly after, and admitted this was one of the worst cases of animal neglect she had ever seen.

Urgent rescue

Speaking to the neighbours, Jan discovered that the dog’s owner had passed away several weeks prior. The dog, named Frances, has been chained up there ever since, unprotected from direct sunlight and rain. Though the neighbours knew that she was there, it didn’t seem like anyone had been feeding her.

As volunteers attempted to free Frances, they realised the chain was embedded inside of her neck. They were forced to take the chain with Frances and then spent several hours removing it once at the vet clinic. When Frances was finally free, she began to wag her tail.

Frances was then bathed several times in an attempt to remove the thousands of ticks and fleas that covered her body. Her eyes were in such terrible condition that they had to be removed. Miraculously, these were the only health problems that Frances faced, and so her future remained bright.

A happy ending

Jan Stenger, the volunteer who rescued her, took her in as a foster. A foster which soon became a foster fail, when Jan realised she couldn’t let go of the lovely Frances.

Today, Frances is enjoying every moment of her life – spending time with her mum and making her smile every day! She is described by Jan as a loving and affectionate dog with everyone she meets – meaning she has kept no grudge against humans for their cruelty.
