Andrew and his cat were the best of friends. The little kitty stood by Andrew through thick and thin. No matter what happened, his furry little pal was always there for a stroke, a cuddle, or a little chin tickle.

Best friends for life

"He was by my side for years, through high school, undergrad, podiatric medical school, and residency," said Andrew.

As his four-legged friend got older and older, he wasn't as active as he used to be. Then, on one sad day, he suddenly took a turn for the worst.

Andrew nursed his beloved pet as best as he could, but he soon realised that the poorly feline was ready to go for his very last catnap.

After spending a few more days together, Andrew booked an appointment at the local animal hospital. Then pair then set off for the last journey together.

"He just finally got too weak to keep up," said Andrew.

But as they got closer to the hospital, it became clear that the cat wasn't ready to let go of his human. As if he knew what was coming, the feline reached out a paw and clutched onto Andrew!

"He held our hands on his last trip to the vet. Little Andrew was much stronger than his mom and I. He was a great guy....

The heartbreaking image soon went viral, and Andrew received hundreds of messages of support from the cat-loving public.

Gone, but never forgotten

Andrew posted his own moving tribute to the departed, showing how we'll always keep a place in our hearts for our pets. He wrote:

"He was a great guy. Always happy to see everybody, always won fights with the dog, and just wanted you around all the time. He purred every day of his life!"

Rest in peace, little guy. You might be gone, but you'll never be forgotten.
