Hollywood is full of fictional stories about hero dogs that perform incredible feats. However, there are real dog heroes in everyday life, too.

This is the case with the story of the Richardson family’s dog, whose heroic actions were much less talked about, yet, just as incredible as any Lassie story.

Zeus the hero

The Richardson children were changing their dog’s water bowl in their garden in Sumter County, Florida, when a deadly coral snake slithered its way towards them.

That’s when Zeus, their 8-month-old Pitbull, jumped in to save his favourite humans. He grabbed the snake, started to thrash him around, and take him as far away as possible from his beloved family. Sadly, during this vicious battle, the snake was able to grab hold of Zeus, and bit him four times.

Forever a legend

Gary Richardson, the children’s father, rushed Zeus to the nearby animal clinic. At first, it looked as though Zeus would pull through. The vets kept him on a drip overnight and were hopeful about his state of health.

Unfortunately, the clinic called the family the next morning to announce that Zeus had passed away.

“Pitbulls are the most loyal dog I know of, and I’ve had a lot of different animals in my life,” says Gary.

“He was my best friend. I’m torn between wanting to be happy that this situation has brought awareness to his breed and their kind and loving nature, and the sorrow of having lost him.”

Gina, the children’s mother, said she feels “forever grateful” to Zeus, who is for her, a true hero. “I feel like I may have lost one my children had he not been there.”

As for the children, they are also heartbroken. They have known Zeus since birth. Only time heals such wounds, if they ever really do.

The best the family can hope for now, is that people remember what Zeus did for his loved ones, and how the story might’ve turned out had he not been there.

Pitbulls are just as loving, loyal, and intelligent as any other type of dog, as long as they are properly trained, socialised, and given lots of love.

Thank you for your sacrifice Zeus, you will not be forgotten.
