A woman walking through the small Leinster village of Coolronan came upon a plastic bag from which she could hear whining. She opened the bag to discover a small face looking up at her. To her amazement, the woman realised she was looking into the eyes of a 5-week-old puppy.

The woman contacted Coolronan Dog Rescue straight away to tell them what she had found, and to the rescue came Ramona Cunningham and Chris Kelly, owners of the shelter.

Little Bobby says hi and thanks for all the well wishes ❀He's doing well and getting stronger everyday 😁 really should have called him Dyson as he just wants to eat everything πŸ™ˆ

[She] contacted us to help as he was very sick and barely able to walk,” Ms Cunningham told The Dodo.

The pair took the dog, who they nicknamed Little Bobby, to a local vet. The dog was found to be malnourished and dehydrated.

He was so weak and emaciated that he couldn't really stand up due to no muscle mass at all on his back legs,” Cunningham said.

Slow recovery

To begin with Little Bobby had lost the use of his hind legs, but the care and attention afforded to the dog by Cunningham and Kelly was second to none. Soon he was moving around by himself.

The couple began to post pictures of Little Bobby on Facebook as a diary of his recovery. And naturally their love for the little dog was such that they were reluctant to part with him despite overwhelming interest from friends and neighbours.

My husband Chris fell in love with him, it's very sweet to see the special little bond they have,” Cunningham said. “Our six other dogs are all female, so [I] think it was time for Chris to have someone on his side.”

The couple have decided to adopt Little Bobby as their own and continue to post pictures of his growing up for all to see.
