A story of horrific animal abuse that sparked a huge outcry from dog-loving members of the public was actually a hoax staged to try and secure some free pet care!

A few weeks ago, major news outlets across the USA picked up on a story about a dog found on the side of the road with her mouth duct-taped shut and deep cuts across the throat.

The public get sucked into the story

Messages of support flooded in, as well as some offers of financial help. The story even led to a tweet from county Sheriff Richard Jones. He said:

"This is appalling, words cannot describe the disgust I'm feeling right now, we will work diligently to find who did this and seek justice."

However, police have now confirmed that the entire story was made up. The person who claimed to have found the dog by the road was actually the owner. When questioned further, the unnamed woman admitted that the dog had cut its throat on a barbed-wire fence. She then confessed to concocting the whole story because she couldn't afford the veterinary bills.

Police released the following statement:

"After the investigation was completed it was determined that this incident did not occur in Butler County, but we will make a joint effort to work with the adjacent jurisdiction to ensure this case is dealt with appropriately."

It's unclear if the person involved has been charged.

An angry reaction from the public

Unsurprisingly, the hoax provoked a strong public backlash, especially from those who had sent messages of condolence and support.

One disgruntled dog lover posted the following message on the county sheriff Facebook page:

"Unbelievable and disgusting. Charges still need to file against the owners, this is still abuse and neglect of an animal."

A similar post read:

"Please take their other canine from them as well! And charge them with abuse of Dani!"

The dog is currently staying at a dog shelter, and welfare officers are working with the local community to find the perfect forever home.
