A National Geographic photographer managed to capture the beginnings of a heartwarming (but slightly unusual) friendship between a cat and a rhino!

Ami Vitale has travelled all over the world photographing animals in their natural environments. From snapping elephants on the African plains to documenting the weird and wonderful species that inhabit the Amazonian jungle, you could say that Ami has seen it all!
She probably thought that, too! But then she took a trip to Dvůr Králové animal park in the Czech Republic. While saying hello to the local residents, Ami met a rhino called Emilka. The rhino then introduced Ami to her best friend in the whole world, a little black kitten called Mia!
The best of buddies
According to staff at the safari park, the odd couple are practically inseparable. They can often be seen going for walks together or simply having a little snuggle, utterly oblivious to the puzzled expression of onlookers.
Video by @amivitale. Back by popular demand! Here is more of Mia and Emilka. Mia, the kitty had her tail bitten off by a different rhino when she was a little thing. But she persisted, kept her heart open, and one day found true love with a rhino named Emilka at Dvur Kralove @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic. This is the same place where the last northern white rhinos came from and they have been instrumental in saving species from the brink of extinction. ️️️ @thephotosociety @natgeo #WorthMoreAlive #protectrhinos #DontLetThemDisappear #rhinos #saverhinos #stoppoaching #prague #czechrepublic #photojournalism #nikon #nikonambassador #natureisspeaking #catsofinstagram #catstagram #kitties #cat #amivitale
Ami caught plenty of these adorable moments on camera and posted the video on Instagram. They've since received thousands of likes and comments, with many people asking a pretty obvious question: what can a cat and a rhino possibly have in common?
Well, nobody really knows - but that's exactly what makes this friendship so special!
What's more, Mia has got some history with rhinos, the kind of history that a lesser cat might hold against Emilka:
"Mia, the kitty, had her tail bitten off by a different rhino when she was a little thing. But she persisted, kept her heart open, and one day found true love with a rhino named Emilka at Dvur Kralove @safariparkdvurkralove in the Czech Republic," wrote Ami on Instagram.
Mia moves on and finds a new friend
Now that's one very forgiving kitty!
