At last, Marmaduke has found his forever home, after more than 1000 days at an animal shelter in California. Staff at the centre gave up hope of this stubborn and untrained dog ever being adopted.

Marmaduke first arrived at the Valley Animal Centre, Fresno in November 2016, according to a social media post. When he first turned up, staff commented on his stubborn nature, even though he was very cute. He also lacked basic obedience skills, but this didn’t prevent him from having fun at the rescue centre. Unfortunately, the grey dog also had skin allergies that required medication and a special diet.

Rescue dog has a new training schedule

Shelter volunteers organised training sessions for Marmaduke, the American Staffordshire Terrier, with Creature Coach Animal Training. Over a period of time, the rescued dog progressed, and his behaviour improved. Unhappily though, no one came forward to adopt the pup. Staff at the shelter were very proud of Marmaduke’s development and in the meantime, volunteers made sure that the grey dog enjoyed lots of cuddles and attention.

A potential adopter comes forward

Finally, after being so patient and waiting for 1001 days at the rescue centre, a prospective adopter came forward, looking for a new canine companion. Marmaduke caught his attention and he decided that they were a perfect match. He soon returned to make the adoption official and become the dog’s forever owner.

Perfect match for each other

In the days following his adoption, the American Staffordshire Terrier and his new owner have been having fun together. The pup gets showered with attention and lots of daily walks. The shelter made a video to show how happy Marmaduke is now – “Congrats, Marmaduke," the video comments, "Happy tails DO exist."

THROWBACK THURSDAY today will end with going back to last Friday at our Dog Adoption Center... for a happy tail we will all never forget. Congrats MARMADUKE! You deserve it buddy! #valleyanimalcenter #throwbackthursday #happytails #adoptdontshop #ourpurpose
