He might be usually chasing hardened criminals and preventing crime, but when a Florida police officer spotted a dog that had been seriously injured, he just had to stop and help.

By Zoe Monk, 14 Aug 2019

Deputy Joshua Fiorelli discovered the injured dog alone and in agonising pain after being hit by a car. He sat with her and comforted her, wrapping his police jacket around her to keep her warm and comfortable. Although the dog must have been terribly frightened and in excruciating pain, she didn’t become defensive with the friendly cop. It seemed that she just wanted someone to help her.

Dedicated to helping injured dog

Deputy Fiorelli stayed with the injured dog, gently petting her until help arrived. He told WFTV:

"It was cold out. She was wet. She didn’t have anyone there so I dedicated to be that person. I know a lot of dogs become defensive when they get hurt. She was not defensive at all."

UPDATE ON DOG RESCUED BY Osceola County Sheriff's Office DEPUTY Fiorelli: I went to visit Fiona (named in honor of Fiorelli) and she is doing well. She is in therapy & needs another surgery but surprised us by standing on her own for the first time ❤ Thanks to our loving staff at Osceola County Animal Services for taking such wonderful care of Fiona! I will continue to keep you updated on her progress.

Taken to animal shelter

The injured dog was taken to Osceola County Animal Shelter and after surgery for a dislocated leg, she made a good recovery.

Unfortunately, the dog wasn’t microchipped and the shelter was unable to trace her owners. Deputy Fiorelli hopes the story will encourage other owners to microchip their dog.

"Keep an eye on them. They may only be a part of your life, but you’re their whole life,” he said.

Compassionate Award

For his kindness, Officer Fiorelli received a Compassionate Police Department Award.

Fiona needs a new home

The staff at the animal shelter have called the dog Fiona and are now looking to find her a wonderful new home in Florida.
