They may be used to alligators living in the swamps and waterways nearby, but residents of the Deep South would rather the critters didn’t take up residence in their homes. Watch the reaction of one homeowner’s dog to the discovery of a young alligator in a garage.

Hurricane Barry beat the US state of Louisiana to a pulp in July of this year. A flash flood emergency was declared in New Orleans and the city's French Quarter was almost entirely flooded. Homesteads on the Mississippi delta were drowned in downpours that at their peak dropped two feet of water within a matter of hours.

Once the floodwaters subsided, residents were warned of an influx of alligators to the surrounding area. The poor creatures were swept up in the swell and were left stranded as the water receded.

In a garage in Livingstone County one homeowner heard their dog barking incessantly from the garage that previously had been under a metre of water. Shared by local authorities, the video posted on YouTube shows a dog in the throes of a fight with an alligator, albeit a youngster.

Reports Inside Edition, the local police used the video to warn people about the “possibility of interaction with wild animals during a flood event”. In other words, residents needed to take extra care when investigating the damage caused to their homes due to the likelihood of their finding wildlife.

Alligators vs dogs

Alligators don’t usually attack humans unless provoked. But they are rather partial to dogs. In 2018, a South Carolinian woman was killed when she tried to intervene in a tussle between her dog and an alligator. Reports ABC News, the woman was dragged into a nearby lagoon. The dog was unharmed.

With a storm surge of alligators now ebbing, residents of the area are still asked to remain vigilant following the recent encounter in Livingstone. Dog owners are advised not to walk within 20 feet of water courses and lagoons.
