A prostitute carrying a Chihuahua with pierced ears could be the title of a painting by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (not shown). But back in May, police in Paris found themselves face to face with the real thing.

In the middle of May, police arrested a prostitute they had earlier cautioned for soliciting. Although the arrest was uneventful, arresting officers soon noticed the prostitute's dog was different from most they encounter.
The Chihuahua (who cannot be named) had pierced ears and was wearing delightfully sparkly earrings.
Its owner (who also cannot be named) pleaded with the police officers to hold onto her dog in custody. Despite their reservations, the police decided that the woman’s request was not unreasonable, and subsequently bought the two of them in for questioning.
The “cute” look
The prostitute claims the earrings made her dog look cute. Perhaps in those sorts of circles having a be-jewelled companion attracts more business.
It is not unheard of for dogs to be cute-ified by their owners, even dogs of owners who enjoy legal employment. The market for dog clothes and accessories is huge. Over the last few years a “humanisation” of pets has led us to consider them more a part of the family than ever before. And in turn, that has led to us treating them like humans.
Furthermore, these days, dog clothes do not simply consist of a little t-shirt and two pairs of pop socks. According to marketwatch.com, customers are seeking “specialised and better quality of pet garments” which is bringing a “radical increase within the growth of pet clothes worldwide.”
While rare, some dogs possess piercings of various sorts. It's crazy how far some people will go to pimp up their pups...
