This is not the first time Fred the yellow lab has stepped in as a foster parent. He went viral just last year for taking another batch of motherless ducklings under his wing.

Unexplainably, the mother of these six adorable ducklings left half of her brood behind when she decided to go visit a nearby pond. Alone and confused, the tiny ducks didn’t know who to turn to. Luckily, Fred, Mountfitchet Castle’s resident pet, spotted them and knew what he had to do.
Very good boy, even better dad
The 11-year-old pooch didn’t hesitate to make his way over to them and lie close. The babies must’ve sensed the great dad material this Labrador was, as they instantly huddled up next to him for warmth, and even started to climb all over him.
It’s an unlikely match, yet, both parties seem to be very comfortable with each other. Within minutes, Fred was walking around the Castle green with some of the little ducklings balancing on his back, and the rest following him closely on foot.
From now on, wherever Fred is, the little ducklings are too.
Simply a natural
Although it is unknown whether the Muscovy duck mum will return to her offspring, we are not too worried. It looks like Fred knows what he’s doing.
“He took to his role like a duck to water,” said Jeremy Goldsmith, director of Mountfitchet Castle.
“Fred has got an absolutely wonderful nature. They absolutely love him.”
