Break-ups are always hard. Especially when you’re on the receiving end of it. Some turn to friends for support, others to family. Rafael Mantesso turned to his dog, and what he did with him to overcome the heart-break is truly unique.

Rafael Montesso, Brazilian artist, has come into the spotlight thanks to his art series featuring his white Bull Terrier, Jimmy Choo.
Emotional support and artistic muse
The dog was named after Rafael’s favourite show designer, and was adopted to help Rafael overcome some mental health issues, including social anxiety. Rafael and his dog soon became like two peas in a pod, which was lucky, since Rafael needed his dog’s support more than ever on the eve of his 31st Birthday.
That’s when Rafael’s wife left him, taking absolutely everything in the apartment with her: kitchen utensils, furniture, decorations, pictures. The apartment was left empty, the barren white walls surrounding Rafael and Jimmy were the only things left. Little did Rafael’s ex-wife know that the emptiness she left behind was to be the inspiration for Rafael’s greatest artistic creation yet.
Rafael told StyleTails how it all started: “After the divorce I decided not to buy any furniture because I planned to buy another place, but I hated the echo and the blank white walls. I started painting on canvas and drawing a lot. Jimmy was always by my side, then one day I started drawing around him and it all came from there”.
Jimmy – star of the art world
Rafael’s artwork is both funny, innovative, and adorable – which is certainly what makes it so popular now.
But beyond helping Rafael develop his career, Jimmy is mainly Rafael’s “partner in crime” and “best friend”.
