A four-week-old Shih Tzu named “Paningning” has become an internet sensation after its owner posted pictures of its strange sleeping position.

Much like a human who's consumed a few too many alcoholic refreshments, little Paningning sleeps flat out on his back. In what can only be described as the corpse position, Paningning's strange habit is a little bit weird, very funny, and extremely cute.
The pictures received 9k thumbs up from social media users, over 19k comments, and were shared 96k times.
Life isn't as tough as it looks for this pooch
Anyone who doesn't know the puppy would think he lives a hard life. After all, he looks like he's just finished a tough day at work and has decided to unwind with a glass of wine or two. But don't worry, there's a perfectly rational reason for his odd behaviour.
Dogs will often sleep on their backs during hot and humid weather. According to Petbarn, it's one of the best ways to stay cool:
“The layer of fur on your dog’s stomach is a lot thinner than the fur on the rest of their body, and unlike humans, dogs only have sweat glands on their paws, so baring their tummy is a good way for them to cool down.”
Paningning lives in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and the country has just entered the most humid part of the year. And with the weather set to continue over the next few months, you can expect to see plenty more photos of this dog's belly.
Only a happy dog can sleep like this
But there might be another reason for Paningning's peculiarity. He might just be a very happy dog! According to research, dogs who sleep with their belly exposed are usually the ones most satisfied with their surroundings. Animal trainer Brandy Diaz says:
"These dogs are going against their instinct to protect themselves while sleeping, which means they are very bonded to their environments and feel very safe around their owners.”
