Have you ever seen such a large house cat? The enormous feline was recently dropped off at Manhattan’s Animal Care Center after his owner had to leave town.

Shelter staff, volunteers, and social media fans alike are all astounded at the size of this cat. Weighing in at an impressive 41 lbs, Barsik is 5 times heavier than a cat his age should be.

He is so big, that he doesn’t fit into the shelter's normal cat cages. Before being taken into the hands of a capable foster family, he was being kept in a makeshift pen in the employee’s offices.

On a mission to shed the pounds

Angelique Luzzolino volunteered, through Anjellicle Cats, to help Barsik lose weight, which basically involves “the same as for humans (eat less, move more)”, she told Daily Mail.

However, this will have to be done very gradually, as cats can develop fatty liver disease if they lose weight too fast.

“Due to his size, he will need to be under the very strict care of a veterinarian to determine the amount of calories he’ll need to lose weight, but also still get enough nourishment for his systems to function properly,” Angelique explains. “His future adopter will have to be 100% on board with his plan and willing to follow it”.

Barsik the Big Friendly Giant

Despite his size, the Animal Care Center’s employees described Barsik as a ‘really sweet cat’. “He’s clearly uncomfortable and doesn’t like to be lifted, as you can imagine. That, combined with the new environment, would make anyone cranky, but he’s not cranky at all,” ACC’s Katy Hansen told the New York Daily News.

Indulgence can certainly make pet owners feel good, but allowing an animal to become overweight is a form of neglect. We hope this poor cat makes a quick recovery and finds his forever home in the near future!
