The poor pooch was dumped outside a grooming shop in a broken wheelchair, leaving her at the mercy of passersby in Salta, Argentina.
One member of the public couldn't ignore the heart-breaking scene and called LUBA Salta, a local animal rescue organisation.
A swift rescue
Once rescuers arrived, they quickly realised that Lunita needed urgent medical attention. They rushed her off to a vet, where she received the appropriate medical assistance.
After making a full recovery, Lunita was put up for adoption. Unfortunately, her first family were unable to provide Lunita with the right kind of care.
Staff began to worry that Lunita would never find her forever home.
Thankfully, after a long wait and lots of patience, the right family approached the shelter and were able to provide a happy home for Lunita.
Her new owners built Lunita a custom made wheelchair, and the rescue dog proved that being a little bit different shouldn't stop you from doing anything.
Lunita even had a few doggy siblings, and the little furry crew enjoyed visits to the park, daily runs, and even birthday parties.
On June 15, 2008, Lunita turned 11. Her family decided to throw her a birthday party, complete with presents, guests, and even a dog-friendly birthday cake.
Lunita got a well-deserved second chance
It turned out to be one of the best days of Lunita's life, as sadly, less than a month later, Luna fell sick and passed away.
Lunita's doggy mum paid tribute to the very special rescue dog. She posted the following message on Facebook:
“I will never forget her and how much she meant to me. She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”
Lunita's story has a sad ending, but it's heartwarming to know that her last few years were the best of her life. And after everything she'd been through, it was just what she deserved.
