The Sausage Dog Walk in Southwold is attempting to break the world record in attendance figures this year
By Published on 29 Mar 2019
It’s the fifth year running for The Southwold Sausage Walk; a popular event that attracted around 600 Sausage dogs together with their owners last year.
The Southwold Sausage Walk event
Taking place on Saturday March 20, the 2019 activities begin at noon from the Lifeboat Shed, Harbour Quay Car Park, Southwold, (Postcode directions IP18 6ND). It is expected that hundreds of Sausage Dogs, or Dachshunds to give them their proper title, together with their human friends, will gather together to amble along the beach, as far as Southwold Pier.
The Sausage Walk began to raise awareness about canine health problems
Laura Baggott, a Dachshund owner, set up the popular, annual walk to support many dog charities throughout the East Anglia region. Her pet dog, a miniature smooth sausage dog named Percy, suffers from Invertebral Disc Disease which can affect as many as one in every four dogs. This year, the event has attracted sponsorship from Skinner’s, a pet food manufacturer from Suffolk. Together with Filing Fortress, another local company taking care of the logistical side of things, it’s hoped that the even attracts a record in attendance this year.
The friendly Sausage Dog community
Every one of the previous Southwold Sausage Dog Walks has been very well supported by locals and visitors alike. All of the dog lovers are very friendly and they love to get together with other like-minded dog owners to gossip, take a coffee and catch up with chat about their beloved pets. Of course, it’s an amazing opportunity to take some great photographs too, with hundreds of Sausage Dogs on the walk. The added advantage is that the event raises much-needed funds for the local dog charities.
Register before you arrive
As the organisers are expecting many hundreds of visitors this year, attendees are asked to register, if possible, on Facebook. A small donation of £5 will be requested on the day, however the Sausage Dogs will all receive a goody bag.
Will the Southwold Sausage Dog Walk smash the record in attendance and beat last year’s 601 Dachshunds on the beach? We hope so.
