A lost dog in Thailand who maintained a year-long vigil when she got split up from her owner died after she got hit by a car.

In 2015, Loung slipped from a pick-up truck on Sukhumvit Road, a major road between Thailand and Cambodia. Hoping that her owner would come back for her, Loung remained in the same place, waiting patiently by the roadside. Many believed that her owner hadn’t realized when she fell, and that they wouldn’t know where to start looking for her, since the trip might have extended over hundreds of miles.

People from a nearby neighborhood kept Loung fed and taken care of, but she didn’t want to be taken in. She actually became a sort of local celebrity, with folks posting pictures and stories about her online. The Bangkok Post reports, however, that after a year of devoted waiting, Loung was struck by a car and died.
