A new study proved that dogs become more anxious than normal when their owners overuse their smartphones in their proximity. Vets considered this as a serious problem since a dog can actually suffer depression from your lack of attention.

Smartphones are a cause of depression in dogs

This study was carried out in the UK. Its objective was to find how welcoming pets can help during the recovery process of people suffering from mental illnesses. During the study, investigators noticed that most dogs suffered depression when their owners ignored them while they used their smartphones.

What does the veterinarian community think?

According to Philadelphia vet Dr Alexander Collada, dogs are very intelligent creatures and they can see the effects that smartphones have on people. Pets are extremely good at noticing most of our indirect cues. If you didn’t know that your dog is very observant, you might want to think again.

Dr Collada is an expert in this field. In his numerous studies, he proved that this animal is so inter-connected to us that he can quickly read our body language. If you think that you hang onto your smartphone for no reason, your dog does know why. “Dogs do read body language, they read our eye contact,” told Collada to ABC13. “They read our facial expressions, so if we are on our phone and acting disinterested, and they’re looking for attention, it basically is ignoring your dog”. The best advice that he always gives all pet owners is to get off our smartphones when they are around.
